Dhaka: Jatiya Nagorik Committee chief organiser Sarjis Alam has filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station under the Cyber Security Act, citing defamatory posts about him on Facebook. The case targets unnamed administrators of two Facebook pages, with the complaint filed on January 22. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akter has accepted the first information report (FIR) and has instructed the police to submit a report by February 27.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Sarjis Alam, a well-known student activist, claimed in his plea that on January 22, he discovered several posts on Facebook involving him. These posts included doctored screenshots of chats purportedly from a WhatsApp account he no longer uses. He alleges that the posts falsely accuse him of plotting cyberbullying against a co-coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, which he vehemently denies.
Sarjis further asserted that one of the Facebook pages falsely accused him of being expelled from the July Shaheed Smrity Foundation due to alleged embezzlement of funds. He contends that these allegations were made in an extremely dishonest manner, intending to damage his reputation and credibility. The case highlights the increasing challenges posed by defamatory content on social media and the legal recourse sought by individuals to protect their reputations.
