Jamaat Ameer Calls for Comprehensive Trial of Crimes Over Five Decades

Dinajpur: Ameer of the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (BJI), Dr Shafiqur Rahman, today urged the Interim Government to ensure that all criminal activities committed under the guise of political actions over the past 54 years since Bangladesh’s independence are brought to trial. These activities include abductions, murders, kidnappings, extortion, looting, and the torture of women.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr Shafiqur emphasized the need for justice during his address as the chief guest at a workers’ conference held at Shaheed Boro Maidan in Dinajpur town. He lamented the past exile of the judiciary, which deprived people of justice, and stressed that ensuring justice would allow citizens to live in peace. He called upon the Interim Government to implement the rule of law through a fair judicial system.

Dr Shafiqur accused the Awami League chief, Sheikh Hasina, of looting the country’s resources worth approximately Taka 26 lakh crore, alleging that she assumed power through vote-rigging. He criticized her for attempting to mislead the people with promises of development, noting that the citizens responded to her actions with a significant student-people movement on August 5, 2024.

He highlighted the importance of respecting the sacrifices of the young generation, stating that only through such respect can their sacrifices be properly evaluated. Dr Shafiqur also remarked on a judge who conducted judicial duties with political bias, calling for a criminal case against him for breaching his oath.

The BJI leader accused the Awami League of falsely implicating many Jamaat members in fabricated cases, affecting even women and children. Despite the repression, he expressed gratitude that the Jamaat-e-Islami party remains active, mentioning the execution of five top party leaders.

Regarding the role of women in his party, Dr Shafiqur assured that if Jamaat-e-Islami comes to power, both men and women will be evaluated fairly. The conference was presided over by Dinajpur district Ameer Principal Md Anisur Rahman and attended by several party leaders and supporters from various upazilas and municipalities of Dinajpur district.
