Koshi Province Government Prioritizes Maithali and Limbu as Official Languages


Biratnagar: Koshi Province Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki has announced the government’s commitment to making Maithali and Limbu the official languages of the province. This declaration was made during an interaction program organized by Public Service Broadcasting Nepal (PSBN) and Radio Nepal, focusing on the role of Radio Nepal in broadcasting news in national languages.



According to National News Agency Nepal, Chief Minister Karki emphasized the importance of organizing discussions, formulating legislation, and conducting research studies on various scripts to facilitate the development and use of these languages. He highlighted the necessity of preserving religions, cultures, and languages of all ethnic communities to strengthen national unity. Furthermore, he suggested that students from grades 9 to 12 should listen to radio broadcasts to receive moral education and discipline.



Internal Affairs and Law Minister of Koshi Province, Rewati Raman Bhandari, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the significant role of state-owned media in keeping society informed. PSBN’s Chairperson, Dr. Mahendra Bista, acknowledged Radio Nepal’s crucial role in preserving ethnic languages across the country.



Tara Prasad Wasti, coordinator of the interaction program, and Pushkarraj Gautam, Director of the Tarini Prasad Koirala Memorial Media House, Biratnagar, informed the participants about the achievements and ongoing initiatives of the Tarini Prasad Koirala Memorial Media House. The event was attended by scholars and media experts who engaged in discussions on the broadcasting of news in various national languages by Radio Nepal.
