Comms. Minister Gurung Urges Swift Launch of 5G Network

Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has emphasized that the theoretical reach of Nepal Telecom to all districts is insufficient. The minister insists on the immediate initiation of efforts to deliver 4G networks to every household and to commence the expansion of the 5G network without delay.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister Gurung stressed the urgency of telecommunications expansion, highlighting that issues with internet and telephone services could hinder the government’s digital framework goals and pose challenges to achieving digital good governance. In a discussion regarding the annual budget and program of NTC and NTA for the financial year 2025/26, Gurung called attention to the need for reducing network issues on highways and expanding services to areas where they are most needed by the public.

He also highlighted the importance of internet and telephone facilities in promoting tourism and urged for effective network expansion in tourist destinations. Minister Gurung noted the low level of promotional activities by Nepal Telecom and suggested increasing public awareness about NTC through promotions in sectors like education and health.

During the discussion, Communications Secretary Radhika Aryal instructed NTA to devise an action plan that would stimulate the young generation engaged in innovative information technology work. She emphasized that it is the state’s responsibility to support such initiatives in line with contemporary demands.

NTA Chair Bhupendra Bhandari reported that the 5G network rollout is nearing completion, with the bidding process set to begin shortly. Additionally, NTC Acting Managing Director Sabina Maskey (Pradhan) confirmed the ongoing 4G expansion and preparations for the 5G launch.
