Govt Reaffirms Commitment to Human Rights Promotion and Protection


Kathmandu: Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ajay Kumar Chaurasiya emphasized the government’s commitment towards the protection and promotion of human rights during a recent meeting.



According to National News Agency Nepal, the meeting of the Committee of Law, Justice and Human Rights under the House of Representatives (HoR) saw Minister Chaurasiya reiterate the government’s intention to prioritize the implementation of recommendations made by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). He stressed the importance of promoting human rights through the judicious use of available resources and mentioned that efforts to update human rights-related legislation were already underway.



NHRC Chairperson Tap Bahadur Magar highlighted the need to enhance the implementation capacity of human rights initiatives and called for collaboration among stakeholders. Parliamentarian Santosh Pariyar expressed concerns about the current state of human rights implementation in the country, urging policymakers to take the issue more seriously.



Parliamentarian Sher Bahadur Kunwar emphasized the importance of government responsiveness to the Commission’s recommendations, suggesting that the state needs to be pressured for more effective implementation. Ranju Kumari Jha proposed that Nepal should publicly address its stance on the global human rights situation, while Suhang Nemwang advocated for the fulfillment of commitments outlined in the Commission’s mid-term review report.



Other parliamentarians, including Pratikshya Tiwari, Nagina Yadav, and Ram Kumar Rai, collectively urged both the government and the Commission to focus on the protection and promotion of human rights.
