Kathmandu: The “2025 Inaugural Himalayan Rim Regional Film Exhibition” has officially commenced at the Central Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Tribhuvan University. The event, themed “Civilizational Mutual Learning, Technological Innovation,” offers a variety of activities, including animated film screenings, craft workshops, cultural creative displays, and cinematic dialogues, bringing together traditional Chinese culture and modern technology for young Nepali students.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the event kicked off with an AI-produced promotional short film, followed by the screening of ‘The Spirit of the Mountains,’ an AI-Generated Content (AIGC) animated short. This film is inspired by the Chinese intangible cultural heritage technique of “Quanxing Tuo” (full-form rubbing), highlighting the integration of artificial intelligence with traditional culture.
Following the screening, Director Pang Jia connected via video link to demonstrate the AI scene-generation process in real-time. Producer Junyan Huang engaged in an interactive session to further elaborate on the film’s production.
Dr. Kundan Aryal, Head of the Central Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at Tribhuvan University, highlighted the department’s transition into digital media and the forthcoming introduction of a film studies course. He emphasized the importance of such exhibitions in bridging the gap between Nepal and China.
Nepali film actor Pradeep Khadka expressed Nepal’s interest in collaborating with the Chinese film industry, noting that Nepali films could be exported globally as digital products. Actor Buddhiman Tamang and Director Pradeep Shahi echoed these sentiments, expressing admiration for Chinese animation and technology and a desire for cooperation.
The inaugural event was attended by film actors, directors, film critics, journalists, and students. In the afternoon, the animated film ‘The Legend of Hei 2’ attracted many students with its dynamic storyboard pre-visualization technology, telling a story of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.
The “Blind Box Interaction” session was a highlight, with students eagerly participating for a chance to win limited-edition film merchandise. Faculty and students at Tribhuvan University warmly welcomed this inaugural stop of the touring exhibition.
Students expressed appreciation for the unique aesthetic style and production techniques of Chinese animation and anticipation for future bilateral cooperation in digital creation. Organized by 1905 Movie Network, the exhibition aims to enhance China-Nepal cultural exchange and establish a digital bridge for the youth.
Following its stint at Tribhuvan University, the exhibition will proceed to Kathmandu University and Lumbini Buddhist University and is scheduled to conclude on 21st December.
