Birgunj Implements Waste Disposal Ban in Sirsiya River During Chhath Festival

Birgunj:An all-party meeting convened in Birgunj has reached a decision to prohibit the disposal of waste in the Sirsiya River during the upcoming Chhath festival. This measure is intended to provide a clean and conducive environment for Chhath devotees.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the meeting, chaired by Chief District Officer Bhola Dahal, resolved to ensure the cleanliness of the river and maintain a healthy environment. Industries have been instructed to refrain from discharging untreated wastewater into the river, particularly those containing chemicals. It is mandatory for industries to operate wastewater treatment plants continuously.

The meeting, which included the participation of Birgunj Metropolitan City Mayor Rajeshman Singh, also decided to initiate the preparation of a land identification and feasibility study report for constructing a common processing center. Grants for small and medium industries will be provided by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the government.

Additionally, previous decisions and actions concerning the Sirsiya River were revisited. The meeting emphasized seeking technical assistance from federal and provincial governments for the long-term restoration of the river. Plans were discussed for the immediate construction of an alternative drainage system to redirect sewage. Furthermore, the establishment of the ‘Sirsiya River Conservation Joint Fund’ was proposed, with funding contributions from the three tiers of government.
