Chitwan: The price of eggs has been increased. The Nepal Layers Poultry Breeders Association has fixed the support price to be implemented from today. Accordingly, the farm price in Chitwan has been set at Rs. 480 per crate for large size eggs and Rs. 450 for medium size eggs. This represents an increase of Rs. 30 per crate or 30 eggs.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the President of the Nepal Layers Poultry Breeders Association, Binod Pokharel, attributed the price hike to low production and high demand. Four months ago, 40,000 cartons of eggs were produced daily, but the number has now dropped to between 28,000 to 30,000 cartons.
Dr. Ananta Dahal, an associate professor at the Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU), Rampur, explained that egg production has decreased due to increasing temperatures, which cause egg-laying chickens to consume less feed. Production has decreased by about 25 percent.
Additionally, diseases are prevalent during this season, and increased humidity from rain exacerbates heat stress on chickens, further reducing production.
Meanwhile, Dr. Bijay Kumar Shrestha, Head of the National Poultry Disease Research Laboratory in Bharatpur, confirmed that samples from Chitwan and surrounding districts have shown H9 (or H9N2) disease in 50 poultry farms.
