Kathmandu: A committee formed by the government to assess the loss during the Gen-Z Movement and to prepare plans for the reconstruction of public infrastructure has submitted its report to Prime Minister Sushila Karki. The report highlights significant damage across various sectors, emphasizing the need for urgent reconstruction efforts.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Committee Coordinator and Secretary of the National Planning Commission, Rabilal Pantha, shared the executive summary of the report during a meeting of the Council of Ministers. The Prime Minister’s Secretariat confirmed that the report was submitted within a span of 75 days under the coordination of the National Planning Commission Secretary.
The committee’s findings reveal that a total of 262 local levels across 54 districts in all seven provinces experienced losses during the Gen-Z Movement. The report details the tragic loss of life, with 20 fatalities on September 8, 37 on September 9, and an additional 20 deaths following the protests on those dates.
The report further highlighted that 429 individuals sustained injuries, including 17 children under the age of 13. The overall physical loss was assessed at Rs 84.45 billion, underscoring the extensive impact of the protests.
Additionally, the report indicates that a total of 2,168 bodies or institutions were affected, with 2,671 buildings damaged, resulting in a financial loss of over Rs 39.31 billion. The transportation sector also suffered significantly, with 12,659 vehicles damaged, accounting for a loss of Rs 12.93 billion.
The report clearly delineates the financial impact on different sectors, stating that the government/public sector faced a loss of Rs 44.93 billion, while the private sector incurred losses amounting to Rs 33.54 billion. Furthermore, the community and other sectors recorded a loss of Rs 5.97 billion, illustrating the widespread economic ramifications of the movement.
