Kathmandu: Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Dr Madan Prasad Pariyar has emphasized the need for Nepal to spearhead efforts in highlighting mountain conservation issues on a global platform. He made these remarks during a program organized by the Ministry of Forests and Environment to mark International Mountain Day.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Dr Pariyar highlighted that Nepal is significantly impacted by climate change, necessitating collective actions to mitigate its effects. He praised the indispensable role of local communities, including indigenous peoples, ethnic groups, Dalits, and marginalized communities, in mountain and nature conservation. These communities have provided environmental services and resources to people in lower regions, though their contributions often go unrecognized.
The Minister raised concerns about the adverse effects of climate change, such as snowmelt and the formation and bursting of glacial lakes, which threaten over two billion people living in low-lying areas. He called for unified efforts to conserve glaciers, manage water resources sustainably, enhance mountain food systems, expand scientific research, and ensure equitable access to climate finance.
Dr Pariyar also mentioned the government’s initiatives, including the National Climate Change Policy 2019, the National Adaptation Plan 2021, and the Third Nationally Determined Contribution 2025. These are aimed at promoting glacier conservation, sustainable water resource management, biodiversity, agricultural systems, and community safety.
Secretary at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Govinda Kumar Karki, noted Nepal’s active engagement in climate change discussions, including mountain-related issues, at the recent COP-30 in Bel©m, Brazil. Ministry Secretary Rajendra Prasad Mishra and Joint Secretary Dr Maheshwor Dhakal also shared insights on Nepal’s participation and achievements during COP-30.
