Government’s Budget Spending Falls Short of Target Amid Revenue Decline


Kathmandu: The government’s revenue and expenditure both have appeared weak in the last fiscal year 2024/25.



According to National News Agency Nepal, the statistics shared by the Financial Comptroller General Office (FCGO) indicate that the government’s revenue has shrunk to 82 percent and expenditure to 81 percent compared to the annual target.



The government introduced a budget of Rs 1,860 billion 303 million for the last fiscal year. By the end of Ashad (July 16, 2025), Rs 1,523 billion 106 million 800 thousand had been spent, which is equivalent to 81.87 percent of the annual target. An allocation of Rs 1,140 billion 664 million 500 thousand was made for current expenditure, of which 85.95 percent, or Rs 980 billion 282 million 100 thousand, has been utilized.



Similarly, under the capital heading, Rs 352 billion 354 million was allocated, with 63.2 percent or Rs 222 billion 682 million 300 thousand being spent. The FCGO reported that under the financial management heading, Rs 367 billion 284 million 500 thousand was allocated, with 87.14 percent, equivalent to Rs 320 billion 424 million, utilized.



The government’s revenue collection also fell significantly short of the target. For the last fiscal year, the government aimed to collect Rs 1,471 billion 629 million 500 thousand but only achieved 82.88 percent of this target, amounting to Rs 1,219 billion 718 million 600 thousand. The government has spent Rs 303 billion 380 million more than its income.
