HoR Engages in Debate Over Protocol to Forced Labour Convention


Kathmandu: Today’s meeting of the House of Representatives discussed the ILO Forced Labour Convention 29 and its protocol of 2014.



According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister for Youth, Labor and Employment Ramji Yadav presented a proposal seeking a general discussion on ILO Convention no. 29 and its protocol of 2014, along with ‘ILO Convention no. 81 relating to Labour Inspection.’ The discussion was aimed at evaluating the current state and future implementation strategies for these international labour standards.



Responding to questions raised during the discussion, Minister Yadav stated that a comprehensive plan for the implementation of the ILO convention and its protocol would be developed after considering the feedback and suggestions received from the representatives. He highlighted that significant progress has been made in settling labor-related cases, with processes of relief, rescue, and compensation being ramped up. Minister Yadav noted that Rs. 120 million in compensation has been distributed over the last three months.



During the session, various Members of Parliament underscored the necessity for effective implementation of labor laws, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a decent workplace environment for workers. They also called for creating an investment-friendly atmosphere conducive to trade and business growth in the country.



The next meeting of the House of Representatives is scheduled to be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday.
