Koshi Province Implements Disaster Insurance and Settlement Relocation for Risk Reduction

Koshi: The Koshi Province government has initiated measures such as disaster insurance and the relocation of human settlements to mitigate risks and damage from disasters. The Province Disaster Management Council, led by Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki, convened on Monday to discuss preventive strategies aimed at minimizing disaster impacts.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the early arrival of the monsoon season, which is expected to last longer this year, has prompted the need for early preparedness and an early warning system to reduce potential losses of lives and property. The meeting focused on devising effective disaster response strategies, including the procurement and distribution of relief materials.

The council approved an expenditure of over Rs 7.5 million for the purchase and distribution of relief supplies for the fiscal year 2024/25. Additionally, strategic action plans for disaster management and early preparedness were endorsed during the meeting.

Chief Minister Karki emphasized the importance of prioritizing disaster insurance and relocating high-risk human settlements as part of the disaster response efforts. Currently, 4,151 families living in high-risk areas have been identified for immediate relocation to safer locations.

CM Karki instructed relevant agencies to act swiftly, considering the available budget and workforce. Records from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law in the Province indicate that compensation has been provided to 34 families affected by incidents such as fire, flood, lightning, and explosions.
