Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel emphasized the need to make the postal service of the country more modern, commercial, and competitive. The Minister, who is also the spokesperson of the government, made these remarks during his visit to the General Post Office at Dillibazar, Kathmandu.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister Kharel urged the concerned authorities to modernize postal services considering the changing context of the country. He stressed the importance of effectively implementing an action plan for all the postal offices across the country to generate income and contribute to the State and the public. Minister Kharel articulated, “We should make the postal service more commercial and competitive. The Postal Office should be able to generate income.”
During his inspection, Minister Kharel directed the relevant authorities to expedite the implementation of the ‘Smart Post Office’ framework. This framework aims to modernize postal services by integrating information technology to expand services and improve efficiency.
Radhika Aryal, Secretary at the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, shared that the Ministry is working on policy and structural reforms for the ‘Smart Post Office’ concept. She revealed that a proposal seeking approval for the criteria for the ‘Smart Post Office’ has already been presented. Aryal expressed confidence that the proposal will be approved and implemented shortly.
Accompanying Minister Kharel during the inspection, Aryal disclosed that the necessary budget has been allocated in the ongoing fiscal year 2025/26 to transform at least 50 postal offices into smart post offices.
