Kathmandu: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, through its Meteorological Forecasting Division, has announced that the monsoon, which arrived in Nepal 15 days earlier than usual, will remain inactive for the next week. The monsoon entered from the east of Nepal on Thursday night, encompassing most of the Koshi Province.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Meteorological Forecasting Division has indicated that there will be a reduction in rainfall and a rise in temperatures as the monsoon is expected to stay dormant for approximately a week. Meteorologist Hari Prasad Dahal noted that the monsoon’s spread in the Koshi Province, which began on Monday, will pause, leading to a predicted decrease in rainfall.
“Although the average date for the onset of the monsoon in Nepal is June 13, the monsoon has already entered from the eastern region of Nepal on May 29, and it is yet to spread to the remaining areas. It is seen that the monsoon will be inactive for the next week,” Dahal stated.
The initial heavy rainfall in the eastern region on the day of the monsoon’s arrival resulted in flooding and landslides, damaging infrastructures. The Department’s hydrologist, Binod Parajuli, reported over 200 millimeters of rain in the eastern region on that day, which raised river water levels, causing flooding in some areas.
