Biratnagar: Central member of the Nepali Congress, Dr Shekhar Koirala, has emphasised the need for the government to create an environment where people can vote in a fair and fearless atmosphere for the House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5. During discussions with Nepali Congress leaders and workers at Biratnagar Metropolitan City-6, he highlighted the importance of cooperation and coordination between the government and party workers to foster an election-friendly environment.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Koirala expressed concerns about the possibility of holding fair elections amidst fear and intimidation. He urged the government to take special initiatives to address these concerns. He pointed out that approximately 5,000 prisoners who escaped during the Gen Z movement on September 9 are still at large, and five to seven thousand weapons looted from the police have not been recovered. This situation has created an atmosphere of fear and threat among the general public. Koirala called for coordination among the government, political parties, and relevant bodies to ensure a conducive environment for elections.
Koirala reiterated that the Nepali Congress is a responsible party that operates according to the will of the people and is committed to holding the party’s general convention alongside fostering an environment suitable for elections.
In a separate event, Koirala addressed the need for entrepreneurs and businesspeople to engage in improving the country’s declining economic situation. During the inauguration of an exhibition of domestic products organised by the Terapantha Mahila Mandal, he stressed the importance of joint efforts by the state and business community to enhance the economic landscape post-Covid-19 pandemic. He urged the government to focus on ending corruption and promoting good governance.
Koirala recommended the introduction of special liberal policies in areas such as religious and adventure tourism, information technology, agricultural modernization, and health to boost the income level of Nepal and its citizens. Mandal’s Chairperson, Milan Naulakha, acknowledged the contributions of women workers to the country’s economic development, as 32 stalls showcased domestic products at the one-day exhibition.
