Nepal Advocates for Climate Justice at International Forums: Foreign Minister Rana

Pokhara: Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba has articulated that Nepal has been actively advocating for climate justice on international platforms. At a programme organized by Nepal Tarun Dal, Kaski, in Pokhara, Foreign Minister Rana emphasized the necessity for Nepal to receive compensation through the Fund for responding to Loss and Damage.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the Foreign Minister stated that Nepal has already raised this issue at the International Court of Justice. She highlighted that Nepal is enduring the adverse effects of carbon emissions caused by developed countries. “We strongly raised the issue that Nepal should get compensated for loss and damage and our damaged physical structures like bridges and school buildings should be built,” she mentioned. She also advocated for reducing Nepal’s carbon emissions to net-zero and suggested launching a tree plantation campaign to increase the current forest area of 45 percent.

Minister Rana pointed out that climate change poses a significant challenge and stressed the crucial role of the new generation in mitigating its risks. She highlighted the importance of planting trees, reducing plastic use, and increasing the adoption of electric vehicles and renewable energy to protect future generations from the impacts of climate change.

Furthermore, the Foreign Minister asserted that Nepal’s independence and sovereignty are recognized globally due to its stable foreign policy. “Nepal has its own foreign policy. It has its own identity in the world community and we have been maintaining it since long. It is a matter of pride for all,” she shared.

Additionally, National Assembly member and outgoing central President of Nepal Tarun Dal, Jit Jung Basnet, called for the timely convention of all-levels of the Tarun Dal and emphasized the implementation of the seven-point deal between Nepali Congress and CPN (UML) during government formation. Meanwhile, Tarun Dal president Bidhwan Gurung encouraged members to engage in rescue and relief efforts in the event of a disaster.
