Kathmandu: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on doctors across Nepal to promptly resume healthcare services. This appeal comes in light of the significant risks posed to the lives of hundreds of thousands due to the suspension of essential healthcare services.
According to National News Agency Nepal, NHRC Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokhrel emphasized the need for doctors to uphold their professional responsibilities and integrity by continuing healthcare services. In a press statement, Dr. Pokhrel urged stakeholders to address the ongoing disputes in the health sector through constructive dialogue and legal channels, particularly concerning disagreements over the establishment of the Consumer Court.
The Consumer Court recently ruled against several hospitals, mandating compensation for patients due to alleged negligence by both hospitals and doctors. In response, the Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has led a protest, resulting in the suspension of all healthcare services except for emergency care throughout the country. This protest challenges certain aspects of the Consumer Protection Act, 2075.
The NHRC has also reported receiving complaints regarding violations of citizens’ rights to accessible and convenient healthcare services. The commission reiterated in its statement that the shutdown of essential services, including emergency care, contravenes constitutional mandates.
