Kathmandu: Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut has highlighted the significant role played by the Office of Attorney General (OAG) in enhancing the criminal justice system. Speaking at an event marking the 75th anniversary of the OAG, CJ Raut emphasized the need for scientific investigation to further improve prosecution efforts. He stressed the importance of enforcing court verdicts to ensure citizens can realize justice, noting that maintaining justice is crucial for building a civilized society.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Anil Kumar Sinha, remarked that objective and in-depth analyses of legal issues are instrumental in achieving justice. At the same event, Senior Justice Sapana Pradhan Malla underscored the necessity of centering investigations around people, asserting that this approach would secure justice for victims. She also highlighted the challenges currently faced by the judiciary and urged Gen Z youth to leverage digital platforms to combat digital crimes.
Attorney General Sabita Baral stated that the OAG is consistently working towards reform in the criminal justice system. Given that attorney offices are responsible for prosecution, Baral emphasized the need for these offices to operate with integrity. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Public Service Commission, Madhav Prasad Regmi, raised concerns regarding potential influences on prosecution due to the Attorney General’s advisory role to the government. However, he noted positively that over 50 percent of candidates were recruited through the public service exam for attorney service.
Chairman of Nepal Bar Association, Prof Dr Bijay Prasad Mishra, expressed his hopes for the OAG to achieve success in ensuring justice through reforms in criminal prosecution. Inspector General of Nepal Police, Dan Bahadur Karki, mentioned that the police are advancing criminal investigations with a systematic and technology-friendly approach, working in coordination with the OAG.
Deputy Attorney General Sanjiv Raj Regmi reported that despite damages to the OAG office caused by the September 8-9 Gen Z movement, the office swiftly repaired the damage and resumed service. A total of 19 OAG offices sustained damage during the movement.
At the event, Joint Attorney Achyut Mani Neupane was honored as the best attorney, with various awards conferred on 13 attorneys and OAG employees. CJ Raut presented the awards, and Neupane expressed that the honor has energized and increased his sense of responsibility. A special publication of the OAG was also released to commemorate the occasion.
