Kathmandu: Leader of the main opposition party and CPN (Maoist Centre) Chair, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, has called on the government to immediately enhance its disaster response mechanisms in light of recent floods and landslides. Addressing the House of Representatives, Dahal stressed the urgent need for improved inter-country disaster information-sharing and international cooperation to tackle the threats posed by glacial floods and increased river flows.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Dahal, who is also a former Prime Minister, highlighted past incidents where delayed rescue operations resulted in fatalities, urging the government to be better prepared this year. He criticized the government’s inability to ensure good governance, pointing out that public trust is eroding, including dissatisfaction among activists within the ruling parties.
Dahal accused the government of failing to establish good governance by citing several irregularities, including issues related to the Securities Board, the Bhutanese refugee crisis, land scandals, and protection of land mafias. He also expressed concern over the government’s disinterest in programs that could bolster a self-reliant economy, such as domestic liquor management and cannabis cultivation for medicinal purposes.
The opposition leader emphasized the necessity of serious discussions on budget-making, policy priorities, and inclusiveness, criticizing the government for its neglect towards youth employment and nation-building. Dahal noted that corruption investigations from the previous administration have been stalled, warning that the country remains on the ‘gray list’ for money laundering and requires decisive government action to improve its standing.
He highlighted the need for national investigations into issues at Tribhuvan International Airport’s immigration system and visit visa processes, which opposition parties have brought to the government’s attention. Despite these challenges, Dahal explained that the opposition allowed the parliamentary session to proceed due to the constitutional requirement to present the budget.
Reflecting on his political journey, Dahal reaffirmed the opposition’s commitment to presenting crucial bills in Parliament, contributing to the nation’s progress. He concluded by recalling the historical role of the Maoist leadership in shaping the country’s future and reiterated his vision for driving significant change in Nepal.
