Kathmandu: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has emphasized the importance of the Right to Information (RTI) in promoting transparency and ensuring good governance. Speaking at an interaction with ministerial-level information officers organized by the National Information Commission, the Minister highlighted the constitutional recognition of RTI as a fundamental right for citizens.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Home Minister remarked on the dual responsibilities associated with RTI: the obligation of authorities to provide information and the right of citizens to access it. However, he pointed out that certain types of information, particularly those related to privacy, peace and security, national defense, foreign relations, and diplomacy, are exempt from disclosure.
The Minister further clarified that information required by law should be made available to the public. In cases where institutions cannot provide requested information due to privacy issues, they must clearly communicate the reasons for withholding it.
