Unified Efforts Urged for Conservation of Himalayas as Crucial to Human Existence

Kathmandu: Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Badri Prasad Pandey has emphasized the necessity for collective efforts to conserve the Himalayas, which he described as the heart of the earth essential for human existence. In his address at the ‘Himalayan Climate Charter’ Summit, Minister Pandey asserted that preserving the Himalayas is synonymous with safeguarding human existence, urging both national and international stakeholders to collaborate in the conservation of these vital mountains.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister Pandey highlighted the importance of recognizing the Himalayan region as a shared heritage of the planet and a critical component in maintaining climate balance. He stated, “Mountain is the heart of the earth. It is not only the duty to protect the Himalayas but also the preservation of human existence.”

The minister expressed grave concern over the escalating climate crisis threats in the Himalayan region, pointing out that rapid glacier melting, glacial lake outbursts, and increasing risks of floods and landslides have significantly affected water resources, biodiversity, the tourism industry, and local livelihoods.

Minister Pandey also disclosed that the government is in the final stages of preparing the ‘Clean Mountain Strategy-2082.’ This five-year action plan aims to address waste management, environmental protection, rehabilitation, responsible tourism, and leadership transfer.

Furthermore, he appealed to international financial institutions to direct resources towards addressing the climate crisis impacting Himalayan nations.
