Police Issue Circular Not to Publish Photos/Videos of Arrestees

Kathmandu: The Nepal Police headquarters has issued a circular to all police offices across the country, instructing them not to publish photos and videos of individuals arrested in any incident or crime. This directive aims to prevent the public dissemination of images and footage of arrestees, whether through press conferences or other means of disclosure.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the police headquarters has conveyed this instruction to its subordinate units, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the privacy of arrestees. Nepal Police spokesperson, DIG Binod Ghimire, stated that the decision follows a circular from the Office of the Attorney General, which was based on a directive prohibiting the publication of such materials.

Ghimire further explained that there are exceptions to this rule. In instances where withholding photos and videos of individuals involved in heinous crimes could affect the state and society, such materials may be released to the public. However, this can only occur with the permission of the concerned authorities.
