Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has underscored the importance of harnessing the full potential of artificial intelligence (AI). He highlighted that AI offers an opportunity for development across all nations, regardless of their economic status.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister Gurung made these remarks while inaugurating a seminar titled ‘Indigenous Nationalities and Artificial Intelligence: Protecting Rights and Building the Future.’ The event was organized by the Indigenous Nationalities Commission in celebration of the 31st International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Minister Gurung pointed out that nations that have already embraced AI are reaping its benefits and emphasized that AI should be leveraged in sectors such as agriculture, health, education, good governance, tourism, industry, and disaster management.

Minister Gurung, who also serves as the government spokesperson, called for unity among indigenous nationalities to ensure the implementation of their constitutional, legal, and policy-level rights. He stressed that while AI presents significant opportunities, it is crucial to understand its proper usage to mitigate potential challenges.

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples has been observed on August 9 every year since its announcement by the United Nations in 1982. On this occasion, Commission Chair Ram Bahadur Thapa Magar emphasized the state’s duty to protect and promote indigenous communities, which possess unique knowledge and skills.
