Panauti: The residents of Panauti are preparing to celebrate the Jya: Punhi festival, also known as Hilejatra, for three days starting tomorrow. The conclusion of this festival traditionally marks the beginning of the farming season, particularly for planting the staple paddy. This event is regarded as the most significant among local festivals, drawing considerable participation from the community.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the festival involves various rituals, including worshipping in all the temples of Panauti. An essential part of the celebration is the procession of the Ganesh idol, which is located to the east of the Indreshwar Mahadev temple. The idol is placed on a chariot and paraded around the town, adding to the festive atmosphere.
On the full moon day, known as Poornima, an exciting event occurs where three chariots, representing Bhadrakali, Mahadev, and Indreshwar, are raced through the market early in the morning. A unique feature of this race is the clashing of chariots as they meet, symbolizing a vibrant and spirited competition.
Throughout the Jatra, locals invite guests to partake in a communal feast. A customary practice during the festival is the sacrifice of animals in each household, which is integral to the feast and the overall celebration.
