Parliament and MPs Medium to Strengthen International Cooperation: Speaker Ghimire

Geneva: Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Devraj Ghimire has stated that Parliament and MPs are not only representatives of the voters but also serve as a means to strengthen international cooperation.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Speaker Ghimire highlighted the crucial role of parliaments in converting international agreements and understandings into domestic policies. Addressing the ‘Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments’ organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations (UN) in Geneva earlier today, he noted that by incorporating the perspectives of stakeholders into the decision-making process through parliamentary procedures, it is possible to contribute to building a more dynamic world.

He stressed the importance of defining the roles of not only the government but also civil society, the private sector, educational institutions, and community organizations in the creation of global governance. Ghimire underscored the necessity of prioritizing openness and participatory dialogue, and he advocated for the promotion of inclusivity to make the current global governance system truly effective. He called for ensuring the meaningful participation of underrepresented groups such as women, youth, and indigenous communities in decision-making processes, emphasizing the significant role of parliamentarians in this effort.
