SSF to Take Health Responsibility of Workers and Families

Kathmandu: The Social Security Fund (SSF) has announced its plan to take full health responsibility for workers enrolled in the contribution-based social security scheme, along with their families. The announcement was made during a press conference held at the SSF headquarters, where Executive Director Kabiraj Adhikari outlined the organization’s strategy for the next four years.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Adhikari emphasized that the State, through the SSF, is preparing to assume health responsibilities for workers and their families. He highlighted the recent expansion of healthcare facilities for contributors, noting that these services have been extended to families of informal sector workers and have already been implemented in the current fiscal year.

Adhikari explained, “The healthcare service, which was confined to contributors some five years ago, has now been expanded to their families.” He also announced a 50 percent co-payment facility for treatment costs up to one million rupees, increasing the previous limit of Rs 100,000.

In recent years, there has been a notable increase in the registration of employers and contributors, as well as the collection of contribution amounts. Efforts are underway to regularize contributions from overseas workers. As of the last fiscal year ending July 16, 2025, a total of 20,991 employers and 2,374,486 contributors have joined the fund, with 882,946 workers joining in the last fiscal year alone.

The SSF reported that a total of Rs 83.65 billion has been collected so far. Additionally, Rs 1.75 billion has been paid to regular contributors for various social security schemes. A total payment of Rs 7.04 billion, which includes a special loan of Rs 6.90 billion, a home loan of Rs 130 million, and an educational loan of Rs 10 million, has been disbursed to 34,097 contributors, according to SSF spokesperson Krishna Adhikari.
