Consensus Must for Constitution Amendment: NC Leader Sitaula

Kathmandu: Nepali Congress (NC) leader and NC parliamentary party leader in the National Assembly, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, emphasized the need for consensus in amending the constitution, highlighting that the process should address weaknesses in the current implementation.

According to National News Agency Nepal, during an interaction with media persons, Sitaula underscored the importance of a timely amendment to ensure the constitution’s sustainability. He pointed out that the current government lacks a two-thirds majority in both Houses of the federal parliament, making consensus essential for any constitutional changes.

Sitaula suggested that the government should facilitate the amendment process, with the Nepali Congress, as the largest party in parliament, taking the lead in this initiative. He assured that the party is committed to addressing the issue in a collaborative manner.

In a separate discussion, Sitaula confirmed that the 15th national convention of the NC is scheduled for mid-December 2026. He explained that while the current leadership’s tenure ends this December, the party’s statute allows for a one-year extension. He noted that historically, the NC’s national conventions have not always been held every four years, and current issues with active membership make it unlikely to hold the convention by the end of this year.

Sitaula also critiqued the performance of the current coalition government, stating that it has not met public expectations over the past year. Despite this, he affirmed that the coalition persists based on a two-party agreement.
