MPs Given Additional Time to Review Land Management Bill

Kathmandu: The Member of Parliaments (MPs) have been provided two more days to review the revised draft of the Bill Designed to Manage Land, citing lack of clarity in some of its clauses.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the lawmakers had requested more time to study certain amended clauses in today’s meeting of the Agriculture, Cooperatives and Natural Sources Committee under the House of Representatives, said Kusum Devi Thapa, Chairperson of the Committee. The Committee is scheduled to meet again on August 13 to deliberate further on this issue, she noted.

In a prior meeting, the Committee had tasked the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation, along with the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, with revising Clause 12 (g) of the Bill. These Ministries delivered the revised version of the Clause to the Committee on Sunday morning.

Because the amended version of the Clause was presented just before today’s meeting, the Committee members demanded additional time to examine it thoroughly, citing a lack of clarity. Consequently, the meeting decided to proceed with a detailed review of the Bill.

During the meeting on Sunday, Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation, Balaram Adhikari, emphasized the need for legislation that ensures land allocation to those displaced from national parks and reserve areas. He highlighted that the legislation includes provisions to allocate land to individuals who own land within national park and reserve areas but have not yet received compensation.
