Nepali Army Mobilized for Additional Security Amid GenZ Protests

Kathmandu: In response to the GenZ demonstration that unleashed chaos, the Nepali Army has been deployed in areas under curfew, including New Baneshwor in Kathmandu. The mobilization comes after the Kathmandu administration imposed curfew measures to control the unruly protest, following a request from the local security committee for additional support.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Rajaram Basnet, the spokesperson for the Nepali Army, confirmed that a contingent was dispatched to the curfew-imposed area. This action was taken upon the request of the local security committee after the anarchic demonstration attempted to breach the parliament building.

The GenZ protest, which began at Maitighar, progressed to New Baneshwor through Bijulibazar. It violated the restricted zone around New Baneshwor, home to the federal parliament building. Protestors engaged in arson and vandalism at the building’s gate, prompting Nepal Police to respond with blank firing and dozens of tear gas shells.

The clash resulted in injuries to over 30 police officers, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police and an Inspector. Additionally, dozens of protestors sustained injuries. In response, the Kathmandu District Administration has expanded the curfew area within the district.
