Power Outage Is a Thing of the Past, Claims Energy Minister

Kathmandu: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Deepak Khadka has declared that power outages are now a relic of the past for Nepal, dismissing circulating rumors as unfounded. In today’s session of the House of Representatives, he assured lawmakers that continuous efforts to overcome temporary obstacles, implement systemic reforms, and accelerate production have eliminated the possibility of future load shedding.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Minister Khadka emphasized the need for a long-term strategic action plan to boost power exports to neighboring countries. Currently, Nepal exports power to India and Bangladesh, with last year’s exports totaling 2,380 MW to India and 30 MW to Bangladesh. The country has earned a profit of approximately Rs 5 billion from these exports, as it exports power worth Rs 17.72 billion while importing Rs 12.92 billion worth of power.

Minister Khadka noted that the current maximum power demand in Nepal is about 2,400 megawatts, and electricity production during the rainy season will exceed this demand. He further clarified that the ministry is committed to policy stability, transparency, and institutional decision-making processes, especially in the context of long-term infrastructure development and investment mobilization in the energy, water resources, and irrigation sectors.
