Lalitpur: The Patan Durbar Square, a world heritage site, has been revitalized with the use of traditional Telya bricks, restoring its original allure. The restoration project, undertaken by Lalitpur Metropolitan City, involved replacing Chinese bricks with locally manufactured Telya bricks, thus preserving the site’s historical authenticity.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Lalitpur Metropolitan City invested approximately Rs 15.2 million in this restoration initiative. Telya bricks, known for their historical significance dating back to the Malla period, are considered strong and durable. Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan emphasized the importance of using these indigenous bricks, highlighting their durability and bright appearance. He noted that the previous Chinese bricks, installed during the coronation of King Birendra Shah, had deteriorated over time, necessitating their replacement with Telya bricks.
Local resident Upendra Kumar Shrestha expressed his appreciation for the restoration, noting that Patan Durbar Square has become cleaner and more appealing following the use of Telya bricks. He commended the Lalitpur Metropolis for their positive efforts in maintaining the site’s beauty. The local authorities have pledged to continue the maintenance and reconstruction efforts to preserve the originality of the Durbar area.
