Ilam: Forty-six people have lost their lives in recent natural disasters, including incessant rain, floods, and landslides. The affected communities are gradually returning to normalcy.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reports that six people are missing nationwide, and 24 have been injured due to monsoon-induced disasters. However, the Armed Police Force Nepal stated that 55 people have died from both monsoon-related incidents and road accidents during this period.
In Ilam of Koshi Province, 37 individuals perished in landslides, with additional casualties reported in Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari, and Udayapur districts due to landslides and flooding. The Nepali Army successfully rescued 19 people at risk using helicopters. Assistant Spokesperson at the APF Nepal, Shailendra Thapa, reported that as of Sunday night, 49 people had died, one was missing, and 17 were injured in 22 incidents, including road accidents in Koshi Province alone.
The monsoon disasters have affected 490 households in Jhapa rural municipality, displacing 1,664 people to safer locations. Additionally, 105 houses were inundated in Gaurigunj of Jhapa. Despite these challenges, life in Koshi Province is slowly returning to normal. The province witnessed the highest human casualties due to landslides and floods following heavy rainfall.
Security chiefs in Koshi Province emphasized that rescue operations prioritized saving lives. The Nepali Army rescued individuals trapped in Jhapa and assisted pregnant women from Panchthar and Sankhuwasabha by helicopter. Efforts are ongoing to restore vehicular movement on blocked highways.
A team, including Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, was unable to conduct an onsite inspection in Ilam due to road blockages caused by landslides and floods. Koshi Province Chief of APF Nepal, Deputy Inspector General Kumar Neupane, mentioned that a team from Kathmandu planned to visit Ilam, but road obstructions hindered their journey.
