PM Oli Addresses Peking University, Advocates for Comprehensive Democracy in Nepal.


Beijing: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli delivered a speech at Peking University in Beijing during his official visit to China, discussing the concept of “Comprehensive Democracy” as a vehicle for Nepal’s prosperity and happiness. The address was attended by university officials, faculty members, media representatives, and students.

According to National News Agency Nepal, PM Oli expressed gratitude to the university for the opportunity to speak at an institution with a rich historical background, referencing the May Fourth Movement of 1919 as a pivotal moment in China’s history. He highlighted the importance of education in moving from ignorance to enlightenment and shared his personal journey of political struggle and resilience, which included 14 years of imprisonment.

Oli emphasized the shared ancient wisdom of Nepal and China, pointing out the enduring legacy of great civilizations in the region. He acknowledged the challenges faced by both countries but stressed the importance of carrying forward the tor
ch of progress and innovation. He praised China’s advancements and the role of institutions like Peking University in fostering development.

The Prime Minister critiqued the prevailing global discourse on democracy, questioning its effectiveness and advocating for a broader understanding that extends beyond political frameworks to include social systems that uphold individual dignity and potential. He argued for a “Comprehensive Democracy” that integrates political, economic, social, and cultural dimensions, ensuring prosperity, equal rights, and security for all.

Oli recounted Nepal’s tumultuous political history, from feudalism to modern democracy, highlighting key milestones such as the overthrow of the Rana oligarchy in 1951, the restoration of multiparty democracy in 1990, and the adoption of a progressive constitution in 2015. He credited the collaboration between the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) for overcoming autocracy and achieving political transforma
tion.

Drawing on the principles of People’s Multi-Party Democracy (PMD), Oli outlined his vision of comprehensive democracy, which prioritizes sustainable development, social justice, and informed civic discourse. He expressed concerns about the impact of technological advancements on employment and emphasized the need for democracy to adapt to these challenges.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the role of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s vision of “whole process people’s democracy” in aligning with his own democratic ideals, recognizing the value of cultural and historical contexts in shaping governance models.

Oli concluded by reiterating Nepal’s commitment to socio-economic transformation, emphasizing the goals of economic equity and societal well-being encapsulated in the national aspiration of “Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali.” He called for enhanced educational cooperation between Nepal and China, particularly between Peking University and Madan Bhandari University of Science and Technology.
