Carter’s Contributions to Nepal’s Democracy Remembered


KATHMANDU: The international community is mourning the death of Jimmy Carter, founder of the Carter Center and former U.S. President, who passed away at the age of 100. Carter, a Nobel laureate, was widely recognized for his lifelong dedication to democracy, human rights, and global peace efforts, including significant contributions to Nepal’s democratic process.



According to National News Agency Nepal, Carter played a pivotal role in supporting Nepal’s elections to the Constituent Assembly (CA) and the general elections held in 2074 BS. Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya credited Carter with modernizing Nepal’s election systems and strengthening its democratic framework. The Carter Center in Nepal provided essential support in terms of technology, legal, and policy provisions, and helped establish standards for election monitoring.



Former Chief Election Commissioner Nilkantha Upreti also praised Carter, referring to him as a “father of democracy” and highlighting his immense contributions to human rights, education, and democracy globally. Upreti emphasized Carter’s role as a representative and advocate for democratic values, describing him as a “priest and pundit of democracy for the world and Nepal.”
