Kathmandu: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Shakti Bahadur Basnet, has said government is working untiringly to speed up initiatives on climate action so that climate change impacts could be mitigated.

Huge risk is posed by climate change, so collective efforts are required at global level, according to him.

Minister Basnet said this while addressing a programme relating to ‘South Asia regional energy support’ on Sunday. The event was held by infrastructure development committee under the federal parliament.

Despite negligible role on GHG emission, Nepal is walloped by the climate crisis. So, Nepal deserves climate justice, he underscored.

Minister Basnet reminded recent address Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal made at the UN climate event, COP28, in Dubai, UAE. PM Dahal clearly put forth Nepal’s stand and agenda before the global community.

Nepal is therefore making special initiatives to bring in support from international community to cope up challenges posed by climate change in
energy sector. He also said the initiatives would produce results soon.

According to him, government had prepared a 12-year work plan for development of energy sector, and it was in the process of implementation.

On the occasion, committee chair Dipak Bahadur Singh said common mechanism as ‘climate parliament’ could be utilized for global initiatives on climate action.

Lawmaker Madhav Sapkota informed that process was underway to form a 15-member ‘climate parliament’ in a bid to give right direction to the activities of government and parliament in terms of dealing with climate change issues.

Similarly, India’s Lok Sabha member Sanjay Jaishwal stressed climate change agenda could be forwarded via ‘climate parliament’.
