Indigenous Peoples’ Rights to be Safeguarded, Announces Acting PM Singh


Kathmandu: Acting Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh emphasized the importance of protecting the constitutionally guaranteed rights for the indigenous community. His remarks came during a program dedicated to the 31st World Indigenous Day, where he highlighted the constitutional provisions that ensure indigenous rights, underscoring the necessity for their protection and fulfillment.



According to National News Agency Nepal, Singh, who also serves as the Minister for Urban Development, pointed out that during his tenure in government, the Congress party had implemented the provisions related to indigenous rights as promised in their party manifesto. He emphasized the ongoing need for significant representation of indigenous peoples in the country’s policy-making processes.



Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, also speaking at the event, committed to the effective enforcement of the rights guaranteed to the indigenous community, aimed at fostering their development.



NC central member Dilman Pakhrin acknowledged the pivotal roles played by indigenous people in Nepal’s democratic movements and revolutions. Additionally, central member Taraman Gurung expressed his view that the coalition government of the Nepali Congress and UML should work towards enabling the people to experience tangible change.



The event was organized by an indigenous peoples’ organization associated with the Nepali Congress.
