Literate Women Suffer More Domestic Violence: WOREC.

Kathmandu: The Women Rehabilitation Centre (WOREC) has unveiled an annual report indicating that educated and literate women experience domestic violence more frequently. The report, titled ‘Anweshi’, highlights significant findings from research conducted on the educational status of women affected by domestic violence, revealing that 77 percent of these women are literate and educated.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the WOREC report was released during the 16-day campaign against violence against women (VAW). The study involved 1,393 women, with over 65 percent, or 911 women, experiencing domestic violence at home. The number of literate women facing such violence was reported to be 1,073, while only 23 percent of the affected women were illiterate.

Sunita Mainali, Executive Director at WOREC, shared that the data for this comprehensive study was collected across all seven provinces with the collaboration of human rights defenders. The data collection spanned from July 2023 to June 2024. Mainali
emphasized that the report includes a multidimensional analysis, shedding light on the complex nature of domestic violence cases.

Mainali further elaborated that many incidents of domestic violence remain unreported due to political protection and the cumbersome legal process. The report also underscores that domestic violence leads to broader social issues, including social violence and suicide, manifesting in various forms such as rape, sexual violence, and harmful traditional practices.
