Equipment handed over to women entrepreneurs

Chitwan, Aug 21: The Bharatpur Metropolitan City has provided different types of equipment to aspiring women entrepreneurs to support their business in the metropolitan city.

Mayor Renu Dahal on Monday handed over eight types of equipment to seven groups under the Micro-Enterprises Development Programme for Poverty Alleviation.

Poultry feed pots, spray tank, clothes sewing machines, interlock machines, water tanks, mixture as well as other equipment were provided on the occasion.

Mayor Dahal gave away the materials to representatives of the groups as the metropolitan city had organised the demand-based training.

On the occasion, Mayor Dahal shared that the metropolitan city has been organising programmes with a plan of producing skilled human resources and making them self-reliant.

She mentioned that the metropolitan city would support the potential entrepreneurs, pointing out the need that women should be entrepreneurs.

The metropolitan city had imparted training to 90 women in the last fiscal year.

All urged to be alert, conscious about dengue, its prevention: Civil Surgeon

Civil Surgeon (CS) of Gaibandha Dr Abdullahil Mafi today urged all to be alerted and conscious about dengue disease and its preventive measures in the changed situation.

“If an infected aides mosquito particularly the female one bites a person, he or she might be attacked with dengue disease. Fever, Nausea, vomiting, Rash Aches and pains or any warning sign are the symptoms of dengue. If the symptoms are found in a person, he or she should consult with a registered physician without any delay,” he said.

The CS made these observations while addressing a function ‘Doings in Preventing Dengue’ at the conference room of deputy commissioner (DC) here as the main resource person while deputy director-Local Government Shariful Islam presided over it.

After proper diagnosis, the doctor would confirm whether the person has been attacked with dengue disease or not, the CS added.

As the dengue has broken out across the country, he emphasized for taking necessary measures to fight against dengue.

In this context, collective efforts of all multi stakeholders are very indispensable to combat the dengue.

As part of the preventive measures of dengue, the health department is conducting awareness campaign in the district.

The measures include awareness building, installing billboard, leaflet distribution, cleanliness drive, reading khutba by Imams in the mosques, milking through loud speakers and mosquito killing drive.

They also urged the stakeholders each to make the office and residence its surrounding areas neat and clean to prevent the spread of dengue.

District level officials, all Upazila Nirbahi Officers of the district, public representatives, journalists, scout leaders, NGO activists attended the meeting.

Abahani face Mohun Bagan tomorrow

Six times Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) champions Dhaka Abahani Limited face Mohun Bagan Super Giant of Kolkata in the play-off match of the AFC Cup Football scheduled to be held tomorrow (Tuesday).

The important match kicks off at 7:30 pm (BST) at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.

The winners of the Tuesday’s match will qualify for the AFC Cup group stages, which will begin on September 18.

Abahani Limited already reached Kolkata today to play their AFC Cup play-off match against the Kolkata giant Mohun Bagan.

Earlier, in the preliminary round, the sky blue Dhanmondi outfit Abahani Limited advanced to the play-off stage of the AFC Cup Football beating Club Eagles of the Maldives by 2-1 goal held at the Sylhet District Stadium last week.

Thanks to their two foreign recruits, who helped Abahani Limited to cross the initial hurdle, beating Club Eagles of Maldivesin their AFC Cup preliminary round-2 match.

Brazilian defender Danilo Augusto and Grenadian forward Cornelius Stewart were the scorers in that match for Abahani.

On the other hand, Kolkata Mohun Club eliminated Machhindra FC of Kathmandu beating them by 3-1 goal at the Kolkata Salt Lake Stadium.

In the last meeting of the two teams, Kolkata Mohun Bagan defeated Dhaka Abahani Limited by 3-1 goals in the AFC Cup play-off match held in Kolkata last year.

Sabotage case: 6 Jamaat men jailed for 3yrs

A court here today sentenced six Jamaat-e-Islami members and activists to three years of rigorous imprisonment each, in a sabotage case lodged against them with Tejgaon Thana in 2013.

Also, a fine of Taka 5,000 was imposed on each, and three months more in jail in default of the payment.

Among the six convicts- Aurangzeb and Ishak were out in bail. They were taken before the court this afternoon, but they eventually left the court premises before the hearing even started and didn’t come back.

Judge Saiful Islam of the Speedy Trial Tribunal- 2 issued arrest warrant against the duo cancelling their bail and pronounced the verdict.

The other convicts of the case- Didar Hossen Sajeeb, Yusuf Ali, Mujahidul Islam and Sultan Mahmud are absconding ever since the case was filed.

On October 18, 2013, during the strike called by 18 parties including BNP-Jamaat, 20-25 leaders and activists of Jamaat and Islami Chhatra Shibir took out a procession to create panic among the public and detonated cocktails at police and general people near Shahid Tajuddin Sarani in Tejgaon.

The then ASI of Tejgaon police station Abdul Malek filed a case under the Speedy Trial Act, 2002 after the incident.

During the trial of the case, 9 out of 10 witnesses testified before the court.

19th anniversary of 21 Aug grenade attack observed in Manikganj

The 19th anniversary of the gruesome grenade attack on an anti-terrorism rally of the then opposition Awami League in the capital on August 21 in 2004 was observed today paying tributes to the martyrs under the auspices of Manikganj District Awami League.

On this occasion, an agitation procession was brought out in the town, started from the Awami League District office and ended at the District Lawyers Association building premises after parading the main roads.

A discussion was held after the rally. District Awami League President also the Chairman of Manikganj District Command of the Freedom Fighters Council Advocate Golam Mohiuddin presided over the function.

General Secretary of District Awami League Public Prosecutor (PP) Freedom Fighter Advocate Abdus Salam, District AL vice pesident Freedom Fighter Gazi Quamrul Huda Selim, Joint Secretary Advocate Badrul Islam Khan Bablu, AFM Sultanul Azam Khan Apel and Kazi Enayet Hossain Tipu and Organizing Secretary Sudeb Saha among others spoke on the occasion.

District and Upazila level Awami League and its front organization leaders and activists were present at the function.

The speakers demanded immediate completion of the trial of the case and ensured the justice.

Govt. firm on anti-corruption campaign, PM reiterates

Karnali, Aug 21: Prime Minister and CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said that the anti-corruption campaign has already kicked off in the country and the incumbent government was firm on this mission.

Addressing the gathering of the party cadres and inaugural of the three-month organizaiotnla strengthening campaign organized by CPN (Maoist Centre) Karnali Province Committee in Birendranagar, Surkhet on Monday, PM Prachanda reiterated that the incumbent government took action for good-governance and against corruption.

According to him, the public’s confidence over his party has increased after his government tightened noose against corruption and crimes. “The performance of the government was evident from the action taken against culprits in fake Bhutanese refugee scam, Lalita land grab scam among others.”

Furthermore, he claimed that the incumbent government has provided parentage in addressing problems related to passport and license among others. The PM stated that millions of Nepali migrant workers abroad were brought under the ambit of the social security scheme to ensure financial security for them in future. “At present, 350,000 Nepali migrant workers abroad are benefitted from the social security scheme,” he added.

He argued that if 4 to 5 million Nepali labourers working in foreign land were roped in the scheme, it would mean social justice in a real sense.

As for alleged involvement of his party’s leader Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Mahara’s son in the gold smuggling scam, the PM said that concerned authority was open to conduct investigations into it.

RMP holds confidence building patrol

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) held a confidence building patrol on different roads in the metropolis today aimed at infusing dynamism into its activities related to intelligence surveillance and searching the suspicious through check posts.

Led by RMP Additional Commissioners Bijoy Basak and Muhammad Hemayet, members of Crisis Response Team (CRT), Detective Branch (DB) and officer forces from outposts and traffic divisions with APC, Water Cannon, patrol pickup and motorbike joined the patrol splitting into two groups.

Starting from the RMP headquarters the patrol passed through Shaheb Bazar, Talaimary, Shyampur, Biman crossing, Oitijya crossing and different other streets.

RMP Commissioner Biplob Bijoy Talukder said they conducted the patrol for preventing all sorts of untoward incidents and terrorist activities coupled with ensuring overall security on the occasion of 21 August Grenade attack.

He said none will be allowed to destabilize the existing peaceful situation through repeating arson-terrorism and anarchies.

“We have full preparations to thwart any sorts of arson attacks and terrorism if anyone tries to unleash terrorism,” he ascertained.

Commissioner Biplob Bijoy warned that a befitting reply will be given if the arson terrorism and anarchies ahead the upcoming national election are repeated.

He said they have combated the arson terrorism in strong hand in previous times and the law enforcing agencies are now capable of facing such type of terrorism and any other ill-efforts to make the peaceful Rajshahi metropolis destabilize.

Need-based security is being enhanced in the metropolis for elevating it like the developed cities in the world. More close circuit cameras and night vision cameras will be installed for uplifting the security system.

Commissioner Biplob Talukder attributed that the country has been marching forward with the prudent and farsighted leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Bangladesh Police is fully prepared so that none can halt the country’s progress.

BGMEA for boosting trade, investment with Iraq

Bangladesh and Iraq are keen to achieve trade and investment potentials through deepening bilateral collaboration to bring benefits for both sides.

The interest was expressed when a delegation of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), headed by its President Faruque Hassan, met Khaled Battal Najm Abdullah al-Jughifi, Minister of Industry and Minerals, the government of Iraq, today.

Other members of the delegation were Mohammed Nasir, former vice president (Finance), BGMEA, Nazrul Islam, former director, BGMEA; Sharmeen Hassan Tithi, director, Giant Group; Mohammed Shohel, managing director, Bangla Poshak Ltd; and Mohd Shawket Hossain, director, Bangla; and Nisher Khan, managing director, Banika Fashion Ltd, said a press release.

The meeting was also attended by Ambassador of Bangladesh to Iraq Fazlul Bari, and Ahmed Abdul-Jabbar Ali Al-Karim, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Industry and Minerals for Planning Affairs.

They discussed issues of mutual interests including possible areas of cooperation, environment of doing business, trade and investment opportunities between Bangladesh and Iraq.

They stressed on exchanging more visits by trade delegations of both countries to identify potentials of trade and investment sectors. Such business interactions would pave the way for enhancing trade between Bangladesh and Iraq, they opined.

The BGMEA President briefed the Iraqi Minister on the investment opportunities being offered by Bangladesh alongside improved infrastructure to support expanding trade and investment.

He invited Iraqi businessmen to visit Bangladesh to get a better understanding of the country, its business environment and export products.

Faruque mentioned the developments of Bangladesh’s readymade garment sector with special focus on enhanced capabilities to offer diversified apparel items including high value ones.

Highlighting the prospect of Bangladesh’s RMG exports to Iraq, he sought the cooperation of the Minister in increasing market share in Iraq.

The BGMEA President called upon the Iraq government through the Minister of Industry and Minerals to make visa and consular services easier and faster for Bangladeshi businessmen to facilitate their travel to Iraq.

Faruque also expressed special thanks to the Minister for showing warm hospitality and providing VIP protocol to him along with the delegation.

Minister Khaled Battal assured the BGMEA delegation of the support and cooperation in exploring business opportunities in Iraq.
