KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has expressed his condolences following the death of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, who passed away at the age of 100. President Carter, who was diagnosed with melanoma in 2015, had been receiving hospice care since February 2023.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Prime Minister Oli took to the social media platform X to express his sorrow over Carter’s passing, highlighting the former U.S. President’s legacy of philanthropy and dedication to human rights and peace. Oli fondly recalled Carter’s visit to Nepal in 2013 and extended his condolences to Carter’s family and the American people.
Jimmy Carter, who served as President from 1977 to 1981, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts in promoting peaceful solutions to international conflict, advancing democracy and human rights, and supporting economic and social development. His connection to Nepal dates back to 2008 when he visited the country as an observer for the first Constitutional Assembly elections.
The Carter Center announced that Carter passed away peacefully in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by his family. The cause of death has not been disclosed. Carter’s wife, Rosalynn Carter, passed away earlier in 2023 at the age of 96, marking a year of significant loss for the Carter family.
