Rangpur celebrates 74th birth anniversary of Sheikh Kamal

The 74th birth anniversary of Shaheed Captain Sheikh Kamal, eldest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, was celebrated here today.

The divisional and district administrations, Rangpur Range Police, Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RpMP), Rangpur City Corporation, Awami League, its associate bodies and many other organizations paid rich tributes to Kamal with daylong programs.

The programs included wearing of black badges, placing of wreaths at the portrait of Sheikh Kamal, observance of one-minute silence and drawing and essay writing competitions for children.

The programs also included distribution of certificates, books and saplings among winners of different competitions, discussions, offering special munajats and doa mehfils and charity football match at Police Line ground in the city.

Divisional Commissioner Md Habibur Rahman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Rangpur Range Police Mohd Abdul Alim Mahmud, Additional Commissioner of Police of RpMP Md Saifuzzaman Faruki, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mabasser Hasan and Superintendent of Police Md Ferdous Ali Chowdhury placed wreaths at the portrait of Sheikh Kamal at Town Hall premises paying rich tribute to him.

Heroic freedom fighters, Awami League leaders, public representatives, sociocultural and professional organizations paid rich tribute to Sheikh Kamal by placing wreaths there.

Leaders of the district and city units of Awami League and its associate bodies paid rich tributes to Kamal by placing wreaths at his portrait and arranged discussions and doa mehfils at their respective offices.

The Divisional Commissioner addressed the main discussion arranged by the district administration at the Shilpokola Academy auditorium as the chief guest with the Deputy Commissioner in the chair.

The DIG, RpMP’s Additional Commissioner of Police, Superintendent of Police and Joint Convener of Rangpur city Awami League Dr Md Delwar Hossain addressed the main discussion as special guests.

Officials of different government departments, political leaders and sports personalities, sociocultural and professional activists, youths, students and teachers and elite of the city participated in the programs.

In the main doa mehfil, divine blessings were sought for eternal peace of the departed soul of Sheikh Kamal, one of the prominent organizers of the War of Liberation, heroic freedom fighter and sports and cultural personality.

Sheikh Kamal was born at Tungipara village under the then Gopalganj subdivision on August 5, 1949.

He embraced martyrdom on August 15, 1975 at the age of 26, along with Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of their other family members.
