Kathmandu: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has called for the removal of the system that appoints political figures as Chancellors of universities, arguing that it leads to increased political intervention in academic institutions. In her address to the senate of Tribhuvan University, Prime Minister Karki emphasized the importance of keeping universities free from political influence by abolishing the current practice of having the Prime Minister serve as Chancellor.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the Prime Minister expressed concern over the delayed passage of the universities’ annual policy and program, describing it as an undesirable practice. She underscored that universities should strive for self-sufficiency not only in academic and administrative domains but also financially.
Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, and Pro-Chancellor of Tribhuvan University, Mahabir Pun, supported Prime Minister Karki’s viewpoint. He mentioned that discussions with experts are underway to explore the removal of the provision that allows the Prime Minister to serve as Chancellor, potentially through ordinance or other legal means.
During the senate meeting, a decision was made to restructure both the academic and administrative aspects of the university as part of its policy and program for the fiscal year 2082/83. Additionally, the meeting aimed to amend certain laws and adopt previously stalled policies and programs.
