Kathmandu: A daylong workshop on Tharu Astimki Artwork, jointly conducted by the Agrasan Tharu Mahila Samaj, Kathmandu and the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), showcased the indigenous painting skills of the Tharu community and highlighted the urgency of reviving this traditional mural art form.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the workshop was organized on the occasion of the International Day of the Indigenous People with the aim of emphasizing the significance of Astimki artwork and ensuring its continuity by passing this ritual painting tradition to the younger generation.
Chancellor of NAFA, Naradmani Hartamchhali, inaugurated the workshop and shared his views on the international potential of tribal art forms like Astimki, which are intrinsic to Nepali cultural identity. He stated that such initiatives foster unity and goodwill and promote cultural awareness, addressing the essential question of identity through cultural understanding.
The unique identity of the Tharu community, Astimki artwork, plays a crucial role in fostering national unity, according to Hartamchhali. Vice-Chairperson of the Agrasan Tharu Mahila Samaj, Kiran Chaudhary, echoed this sentiment, underscoring the importance of the workshop in imparting knowledge of Astimki artwork to the new generation.
Researcher Satrughan Chaudhary presented a working paper during the event, describing Astimki artwork as more than just visual art, but an art form that includes performance elements. He explained the significance of the drawings and songs associated with Astimki art, which reflect the philosophy of life of the Tharu community. However, he raised concerns about the gradual fading of this culturally significant artwork due to modernization and the influence of information technology.
The ritualistic painting is created on walls during the Astimki festival, which is observed on Shree Krishna Janmastami, the birthday of Lord Krishna. Over 50 participants attended the workshop, where painters Bishnu Chaudhary and Balaram Chaudhary provided training on Astimki artwork.
