World Metrology Day tomorrow, President and PM issue messages

World Metrology Day, commemorating

the anniversary of signature by representatives of 17 nations of the

‘Metre Convention-1875’, will be observed tomorrow in Bangladesh

as elsewhere across the globe.

Like all member countries of International Bureau of Weights and

Measures (BIPM) and International Bureau of Legal Metrology

(BIML), the day will be observed at the initiative of the Bangladesh

Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) in Bangladesh.

The theme of the World Metrology Day-2024 is ‘We Measure Today

for a Sustainable Tomorrow’.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh

Hasina today issued separate messages wishing the success of all

programmes on the occasion.

Besides, the heads of International Bureau of Weights and Measures

(BIPM) and International Bureau of Legal Metrology (BIML) gave

messages on the occasion.

On the eve of the day, the President, in his message, said the

government is working towards the digital transformation of the

traditional system to ensure a
ccurate weight and measurement of

equipment used in all sectors of industry, trade and services.

Already the ‘Weights and Measurements Standards Act, 2018’ and

Product Wrapping Rules-2021 have been formulated, the head of the

state added.

He said that production in industries and factories is increasing

through the use of modern machinery with accurate measurement.

The president hoped that BSTI would play a more efficient,

accountable and responsible role as a national standards body in

providing the desired services to the people by formulating and

implementing product and service standards and ensuring proper

measurement in all areas of trade and commerce.

In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said through the

sincere efforts of Father of Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur

Rahman, BSTI became a member of the International Organization

for Standardization (ISO) in 1974 and the National Codex Contact

Point (NCCP) of the Codex Alimentarius Commission in Bangladesh

in 1975?

BSTI as the n
ational standards body (NSB) of Bangladesh has been

working relentlessly in determining the quality of various products

of Bangladesh such as food, textiles, housing, health and education

materials and equipment and ensuring accurate weights and

measures as per the standards set by the International Standards

and Measurement Organization since its ISO membership, she

continued.

She hoped that the collective efforts of all will continue to transform

the country into a developed and prosperous Smart Bangladesh by

2041 following the dream ‘Sonar Bangla’ of the Father of the Nation

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Both the president and the premier wished the overall success of all

the programmes of ‘World Metrology Day-2024’.

The Metre Convention-1875 set the framework for global

collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial,

commercial and societal application.

The original aim of the Metre Convention – the worldwide uniformity

of measurement – remains as important today a
s it was in 1875.

To mark the day, BSTI has chalked out different programmes

including discussions at its headquarters and regional offices.

Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar will broadcast special

programmes to mark the day.

The arrangement of sending short message service (SMS) to mobile

phones has been taken while banners, festoons and placards have

been hanged and pasted at various important places in the capital

and district cities.

Marking the day, a discussion will be held at the head office of BSTI

in city’s Tejgaon area at 12.30pm tomorrow.

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun will attend it as

the chief guest, a press release said.

Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Industries Zakia Sultana and

President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce

and Industry (FBCCI) Mahbubul Alam will be present as special
