Kathmandu: The Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) has officially resumed its blood transfusion service from its newly reconstructed facility at Exhibition Road in Bhrikutimandap. This move marks a significant milestone for the organization, which had to shift its operations temporarily due to the damage inflicted on its central blood transfusion service building by the 2015 Gorkha earthquake.
According to National News Agency Nepal, the NRCS central blood transfusion service initially commenced on July 27, 1966, from a modest chamber provided by Bir Hospital, the oldest medical facility in the country. The service was later relocated on December 22, 1982, to a dedicated building constructed with assistance from the Australian Red Cross at Exhibition Road, facilitating its expansion to a nationwide service.
The recent reconstruction of the building was made possible with support from the Thai Red Cross and the government of Thailand, as stated by NRCS general secretary Bhupatilal Shrestha. The reconstruction pro
ject signifies a crucial development in restoring and enhancing the capacity of NRCS to provide essential blood transfusion services throughout Nepal.
