Legal Action Looms Over Illegal Foreign Workers in Bangladesh: Jahangir

Dhaka: Home Adviser Lt. Gen. (retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury announced today that the Bangladesh government will initiate legal action against foreigners residing and working illegally in the country after January 31. The move is targeted at those who fail to acquire the necessary legal documents to regularize their stay and employment.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Jahangir emphasized that action will also be taken against local employers hiring foreigners without proper work permits, which are mandatory under Bangladeshi law. The announcement was made following a meeting on law and order at the Secretariat, where Jahangir addressed journalists.

In response to queries, Jahangir revealed official statistics showing a reduction in the number of illegal foreigners from 49,226 to 33,648, thanks to many obtaining legal documentation. He also mentioned that the government has collected Tk 10.53 crore in revenue from these individuals.

Regarding the Police Reform Commission’s recommendations, Jahangir acknowledged the value of the suggestions but noted that their implementation would require time. He stressed the need for a transformation in police training to foster a more humane and pro-people police force, necessitating a shift in mindset and training patterns.
