Kaligandaki River Reaches Record Water Levels Amidst Heavy Rains

Parbat: Due to continuous rain, the current of the Kaligandaki River has reached its highest point of the year. The water level in the river has increased significantly due to heavy rains across the regions of Mustang, Myagdi, Baglung, and Parbat.

According to National News Agency Nepal, this morning the water level and current in the Kaligandaki River reached its highest point this year. The river’s current was recorded at a height of six meters and 40 centimeters, as noted by gauge reader Krishna Prasad Subedi. Earlier in the morning, the water level had peaked at 7.40 meters before receding when the rain ceased.

The areas of Bagarphant, Baribeni, Milanchowk, Lasti, and Khaniyanghat in Jaljala Rural Municipality of Parbat, along with Maldhunga, Nayapul, and Modibeni in Kushma Municipality, Jaiminighat in Phalebas Municipality, and Setiveni Bazaar in Bihadi Rural Municipality are now at high risk of flooding due to the elevated water levels in the Kaligandaki River.

Setiveni Bazaar, strategically situated on the border of Parbat, Syangja, and Gulmi, faces the threat of submersion in the event of flooding, exacerbated by the dam operations of the Kaligandaki ‘A’ Hydropower Project. In response to the rising water levels, all gates of the dam have been opened. The increased flow from both the Kaligandaki and Setikhola rivers places Setiveni Bazaar in imminent danger of being submerged.
