Nisikhola: As many as 2,438 households from Nisikhola rural municipality in the district are in imminent threat of landslide and floods. The households settled near rivers and streams, roads, and sloping lands are facing disaster risks.
According to National News Agency Nepal, Ward No. 1 out of seven wards at Nisikhola has the highest number of houses facing the threat. There are 920 households in villages like Huldi, Lebang Kiteni, and Swar, according to rural municipality chair Surya Bahadur Ghartimagar. The locals reported facing recurring landslides since 2074 BS. Data managed by the rural municipality indicated that Ward No. 2 has 207 such households, Ward No. 3 has 140, Ward No. 4 has 400, Ward No. 5 has 170, Ward No. 6 has 31, and Ward No. 7 has 570.
Hum Kumari Malla from Huldi described the situation, mentioning that the entire village has developed long cracks. They are forced to stay due to lack of alternatives. A significant landslide occurred a decade ago in the middle of the village, which still alarms residents due to ongoing landslips. This past landslide resulted in numerous fissures and depressions in the villages.
Malla expressed, “All three tiers of government are informed about such problems, but our plight went unheard.” Another resident, Padam Bahadur BK from Nisikhola-2, said they are desperate to relocate to safer areas but lack options. Heavy rains force them to vacate their homes with belongings. He criticized the government’s indifference to their dire situation. Financial constraints prevent him from migrating to the Tarai region.
