Electric Crematorium Operational in Devghat

Devghat: An electric crematorium has been brought into operation in Devghat, a holy religious site on the bank of the Narayani River. The Built-up Urban and Building Construction Project handed over the crematorium to the Bharatpur Metropolitan City after its completion in October.

According to National News Agency Nepal, the Chief of Disaster Preparedness Section of the Metropolitan City, Bal Krishna Thapaliya, stated that the electric crematorium is ready from Tuesday. He noted that the crematorium was not utilized until this morning.

Thapaliya mentioned that nine officials, including an electrician, four city police officers, and four sanitation workers, have been deployed in two shifts for the operation of the crematorium. The Metropolitan City provided training to 16 human resources for this purpose. The crematorium was constructed on four kattha (1,352.52 square meters) of land, initiated by the Devghat Area Development Committee (DADC). The Urban Development Ministry and the Bharatpur Metropolitan City funded the construction.

Mayor of Bharatpur, Renu Dahal, has encouraged the public to contribute to environmental protection by using the electric crematorium for cremating bodies. The cost to cremate a body in the electric crematorium is over Rs 3,500, which is half of the cost using wood, and it takes approximately 45 minutes to one hour. The Devghat cremation site receives around 24 bodies daily from districts like Chitwan, Nawalparasi, and Tanahun.

A monitoring committee has been established by the Metropolitan City under the coordination of Deputy Mayor of Bharatpur, Chitrasen Adhikari.
