Foreign Secretary Rai Outlines Challenges and Opportunities for LDCs in Doha

Doha: Foreign Secretary Amrit Bahadur Rai has highlighted several critical challenges confronting the least developed countries (LDCs), including deep-rooted structural impediments, limited access to international markets, widening digital divides, resource constraints, and increasing climate-related impacts.

According to National News Agency Nepal, Rai made these observations at the High-level Meeting on ‘Forging Ambitious Global Partnerships for Sustainable and Resilient Graduation of LDCs’ held in Doha, Qatar. Serving as the Chair of the Global Coordination Bureau of the group of LDCs, Rai emphasized the need for robust global solidarity and ambitious partnerships to ensure smooth, sustained, and irreversible graduation of the LDCs.

Furthermore, Rai participated in a session titled ‘High-level Ministerial Dialogue on strategic pathways for navigating sustainable graduation amid challenging global development landscape and unlocking new opportunities.’ During this session, he identified key sectors such as agriculture, hydropower, tourism, manufacturing, ICT, and human capital as areas with significant potential for Nepal’s economic transformation. He expressed Nepal’s eagerness to collaborate closely with development partners, the UN systems, and the international community for sustained progress.

In addition to his participation in the meetings, Rai conducted an inspection visit to the Embassy of Nepal in Doha. He instructed the embassy officials to safeguard and promote Nepal’s national interests and to make every effort to provide the best services to Nepali migrant workers residing in Qatar.

The Foreign Secretary’s visit to Doha is part of a three-day trip for the High-level Meeting, which is jointly organized by the Qatari government and the UN’s Office of the High Representative for the LDCs, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island States (UN-OHRLLS).
